Stefaan de Winter

Co-programmer, Cirk! Aalst
interviewed 22 July 2016 in Ghent —

Trained as a classical singer, Stefaan de Winter found his way to street arts when he answered an ad to be an opera-singing garbage man (part of a project produced by MiraMiro for Gentse Feesten). Today he works with the Die Verdammte Spielerei and produces solo works including Kleinste Café ter Wereld (the smallest cafe in the world; Winter is the bartender), La Grande Boite (the world's smallest discotheque; Winter is the bouncer), and Boîte Tutu (a giant music box you can see into; Winter is the ballerina). Alongside his work as an artist, in 2016 Winter became the co-programmer of the festival Cirk! Aalst, an annual event held in a small city not far to the north of Brussels — Winter's hometown, Aalst.
